Leaves

I wrote this for my mom, Marilyn, after she found out she has Huntington's Disease. Some background: When I moved from Ohio to Rhode Island for university, I began a tradition of inserting a colorful leaf to send in a card for my mom's October birthday. Over the years, I've sent her leaves from Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, France, Cameroon, and DR Congo. The colors and associations with Fall and Spring leaves provided much grist for the creative mill, so even I don't understand all of the lyrics.
I'm a leaf twisting through the branches
       landing on my back
Orange, yellow, red, and green
       witness to the world
Put me in a card, send me far away
       I'm alive!
My colors only brighten through time

Every place we're planted, every pungent soil
       breathes the warmth of life
Rough and sweet and deep and curved
       witness to the world
I carry in my body Jesus' death for life
       I am free!
My senses only deepen through time

Hold to His hand, God's unchanging hand
Put your hope in things eternal
Hold to God's unchanging hand

I am free
